Repair or replace?

Most sewer conversations arrive at this question far too early, framed as a choice between two prices. The useful version starts somewhere else: what does the line look like along its whole length, and how are the defects distributed?

The decision sequence

In order: establish the symptom, restore flow if needed, inspect the full accessible run with distances recorded, map where the defects are and how severe each one is, confirm whether grade is intact, establish where the responsibility boundary sits relative to the defect, and only then evaluate methods against those findings.

Every step skipped moves the decision further from evidence and closer to whichever method the person in front of you sells. That is the entire failure mode this page exists to name.

Localized versus distributed failure

A localized failure is a defect with edges: it starts here, ends there, and the pipe on either side is doing its job. A distributed failure has no edges — the same problem appears repeatedly along the run because the material or the installation is failing generally.

Repairing a distributed failure may defer broader work without addressing the pattern. Replacing a localized failure spends money on pipe that was fine. The cost of getting this wrong runs in both directions, which is why the survey matters more than the sales pitch.

Line and grade set hard limits

Rehabilitation methods that work inside the existing pipe preserve its line and grade. That is a real constraint, not a caveat. If the footage shows water standing over a stretch of the run, lining that stretch produces a lined pipe with the same low spot. Correcting fall usually requires excavation and re-laying the affected section to a corrected grade; not every replacement method changes alignment.

The false binary

“Repair or replace” is a convenient headline and an incomplete menu. In practice the options include a targeted excavated repair, a sectional liner across a defined defect, full-length lining, pipe bursting, partial replacement of the failed portion, and full replacement. The evidence threshold

Before a decision of this size, you should be able to answer: how much of the run was surveyed, what was found and at what distances, what the pipe material is, whether grade is intact, what stopped the camera if anything, and what rules out the alternative approach. If two or more of those are unanswered, the decision is not ready — the next step is inspection, not a signature.

  • What did you see along the whole run, and at what distances?
  • What specifically rules out the option you are not recommending?
  • Is grade intact through the affected length?
  • How much of the line is genuinely failing, in feet?
  • What happens to the rest of the line under your proposal?
  • Can I have the footage to get a second read?

Four illustrative findings

One separated joint at 34 feet

Footage shows a clean run to 60 feet with a single separation and root entry at 34. Attention typically turns to a targeted repair or a sectional liner, provided the remaining length is genuinely serviceable.

Cracking at intervals across the whole run

Defects recur every few joints along the length, with the same material behaving the same way throughout. This is where full-length rehabilitation or replacement usually enters the conversation.

Standing water from 40 to 52 feet

A sustained low spot suggests lost fall. Lining follows existing grade, so a discussion of re-laying that section to correct it tends to follow.

Camera stops at 22 feet

Not a finding about the rest of the line. The unexamined length is unknown, and a decision made on 22 feet of a 70-foot run is a decision made on a third of the evidence.

Questions homeowners ask

Is replacement always the safer choice?
Not if the evidence does not support it. Replacing a line with one repairable defect spends heavily on pipe that was serviceable, and it still carries excavation and restoration risk.
A contractor recommended replacement without a camera. Is that normal?
It is not unheard of, but it is not a decision you can audit. Ask what the recommendation rests on and request an inspection before authorizing construction.
Can part of the line be replaced and part lined?
Hybrid scopes exist and can be appropriate where the findings differ along the run. Ask for the boundary between them to be stated in feet.
How many opinions should I get?

Does the pipe material decide this on its own?
No. Material affects failure patterns and which methods are possible, but the decision still turns on what the survey shows about this particular line.
